Malteser AeroMedical opens new air ambulance base in Vienna
New Vienna base strengthens Malteser AeroMedical’s European network, improving response times across Central and Eastern Europe
Malteser AeroMedical has expanded its European air ambulance network with the opening of a new operational base at Vienna International Airport (LOWW), marking the organization’s second dedicated air ambulance base alongside its existing operation in Cologne, Germany.
The Vienna base is operated in partnership with aviation company Quick Air and is equipped with a dedicated Learjet 35 air ambulance. The aircraft is supported by an Austrian Malteser AeroMedical medical team and is available for missions worldwide.
According to the company, the new base will enhance its ability to deliver air ambulance services across Europe, with a particular focus on Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean region.
“Vienna is an ideal location for us and a natural complement to our existing base in Cologne,” said Johannes Hoischen, Head of Malteser AeroMedical. “Having a dedicated aircraft and medical team based in Austria allows us to respond more quickly and efficiently to the needs of our clients and patients.”
While flight operations will be conducted from Vienna, all missions and assistance cases will continue to be coordinated through the Malteser Operations Center in Cologne, which provides 24/7 mission planning, case management, and operational support.
Donald Crawford, Team Manager, Medical Assistance at Collinson Insurance, recently spoke to ITIJ about the changing patterns of travel risks, air ambulance services, and cost containment.
