Marshall University launches first FAA-approved VR pilot training program

The milestone ushers in a new era of cost-effective, high-fidelity training, with Marshall University leading as the first to embed FAA-qualified VR into a pilot education program
Marshall University has become the first US university to integrate a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-qualified virtual reality (VR) flight simulator into its curriculum, marking a major shift in pilot training.
The program uses Loft Dynamics’ H125 VR simulator, which recently received FAA level 7 qualification – a standard so high that nearly the entire pilot training pathway, from private to airline transport ratings, can now be completed in the device. The qualification was conducted at Marshall, making the university the launch site for this new era in aviation education.
“Level 7 extends the foundation that proved immersive VR could meet regulatory standards,” said Loft Dynamics’ Founder and CEO, Fabi Riesen. “By embedding FAA-approved VR at the university level, we can improve safety, expand access, and set a stronger foundation for pilots, from their first lesson through retirement.”
The simulator combines a full replica cockpit with authentic avionics, six-degrees-of-freedom motion, and high-resolution 360° visuals. At one 10th of the size and one 20th of the cost of conventional full-flight simulators (FFS), it is designed to be far more accessible. Loft Dynamics says 80–95% of required flight hours can now shift into VR.
Nancy Ritter, Marshall’s Chief of Aviation Operations and Chief Instructor, called the integration a transformative step: “For the first time, our students can complete their entire FAA-recognized training path in one device, practicing everything from takeoffs to auto-rotations – safely and repeatedly – before they ever step into an aircraft.”
Airbus Helicopters, which has validated the simulator against H125 flight test data, welcomed the milestone. “With its level 7 qualification at Marshall University, together we are placing this technology at the very foundation of pilot education,” said Romain Trapp, Executive Vice President.
Loft Dynamics is now working with schools, operators, and regulators worldwide to expand VR-based training.
Reiser Simulation and Training recently announced the successful qualification of its latest avionics suite update by Austrian aviation authority Austro Control, in line with European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations.
