McDermott Aviation to introduce Bell 214ST simulator from Entrol for aerial firefighting training
The new flight training device will support heavy-lift firefighting and external load operations with mixed reality technology
Australian operator McDermott Aviation is set to expand its pilot training capability with a bespoke Bell 214ST flight training device (FTD) developed by Spanish simulator manufacturer Entrol.
The simulator, based on a Bell 214ST FTD Level 7 configuration, is scheduled for installation during the second quarter of 2028 and has been designed to support the specialist training requirements of one of the world's largest operators of the heavy-lift helicopter.
According to Entrol, the project marks its first Bell 214ST simulator and has required a bespoke engineering approach because relatively few examples of the aircraft remain in operational service worldwide.
The device has been configured specifically for aerial firefighting and heavy-lift cargo operations. It combines an LED visual system with an Unreal Engine image generator and mixed reality technology, allowing pilots to interact with physical cockpit controls while operating in an immersive virtual environment.
To support mission-specific training, the simulator includes a dedicated firefighting and cargo mission package featuring elevated helipad scenarios, airports, and heliports designed to replicate operational environments encountered during waterbombing, sling-load, and precision approach missions.
Additional features include an integrated cockpit vibration system intended to replicate the handling characteristics of the Bell 214ST, along with an advanced debriefing station for post-flight mission analysis.
