On 2 June, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Critical Care and In-Flight Nursing Forum delivered a one-day medical repatriation course for the sixth Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine (NECTM6) in London, UK. It was attended by medical professionals working in the aviation industry and those with an interest in this field of medicine.
The course was developed by the RCN Critical Care and In-Flight Nursing Forum. The presenters came from a variety of UK medical assistance companies including David Quayle from Air Alliance, Stuart Cox from Cega, Mark Clement from Children’s Acute Transport Service, Dr Simon Worrell from Healix and Kerryn Reynolds from International SOS. The international nature of NECTM meant that attendees came not just from the UK, but places as far afield as Australia and Nigeria.
The course included presentations on the essentials of aviation medicine, medical assistance case studies focusing on medical decision making and client, operational perspectives and medicolegal considerations. There were also interactive workshops on medical emergencies, equipment, commercial stretchers and a specialist workshop on in-flight paediatric emergencies.
