Malta’s Missione Italiana di Collaborazione nel Campo della Difesa (MICCD), in partnership with the Italian Air Force (IAF), engaged in the rescue of two climbers who had become stranded on a rock face near the village of Żurrieq on Malta’s south coast in mid-December. The MICCD aircraft, an HH-121 helicopter, retrieved the injured climbers in an operation made tricky by turbulence and proximity to the cliff face, but was eventually able to deposit them on the ground nearby, where ground teams could give them the medical attention that they needed. The helicopter then headed back to base at Luqa airport.
