Munson Healthcare trials drones for streamlined medical logistics

The health system is testing drone deliveries to improve the speed and efficiency of transporting medical supplies between its facilities
Munson Healthcare is trialing uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) to accelerate and optimize the transport of critical medical supplies across its network of facilities in northern Michigan, USA. The health system has conducted approximately 100 test flights between Munson Medical Center, Copper Ridge Surgery Center, and the dialysis center, simulating the delivery of lab samples, medications, and medical equipment.
The initiative aims to reduce reliance on ground transport, which currently requires multi-stop van routes spanning several hours. By contrast, the drone program enables smaller, more frequent payload deliveries – a shift that could significantly improve workflow within clinical laboratories.
“Just between here and the dialysis center, instead of going four times a day, we can now go eight to 12 times daily,” explained Tracy Cleveland, Vice President of Supply Chain at Munson Healthcare. “That means fewer items per trip, but more consistent deliveries. For the lab, that translates into a smoother, continuous workflow rather than waiting on a van with hundreds of tests.”
The project is a multi-agency collaboration involving Traverse Connect, Central Michigan University, DroneUp, and blueflite, and represents a growing trend in the integration of UAS for point-to-point healthcare logistics.
The global medical drones market is forecast to be worth US$1.2 billion by 2032.
