New drones for Andratx, Majorca
The drones will be used to support the municipal government’s response to crime and various emergencies in the area
The town of Andratx, on the Spanish island of Majorca, has acquired three drones to improve law enforcement and public safety.
The three drones will be distributed to local government departments – one to the local police, one to the environmental department, and one to the local civil protection group, according to a report by the Majorca Daily Bulletin newspaper.
It is hoped that the new remotely piloted aircraft will allow a faster response to crimes and emergencies in the municipality.
Since the scheme’s launch, officers have reported success at detecting a range of incidents, including the illegal dumping of waste, and the detection of uncontrolled fires and illegal parties.
California’s Santa Barbara County Fire Department recently acquired a new US$100,000 drone system designed to start backfires for wildfire control.
