New, upgraded helipad opens at Glenfield Hospital

This development has been made possible through a donation of over £288,000 from the HELP Appeal, a UK charity dedicated to funding National Health Service (NHS) hospital helipads. The upgraded helipad is expected to see around 40 landings per year.

Designed with a larger landing area to accommodate modern aircraft and advanced lighting systems for safe nighttime landings, the new helipad will facilitate quicker and smoother emergency transfers to specialist departments, improving patient outcomes.

Robert Bertram, Chief Executive of the HELP Appeal, commented: “Our supporters have been instrumental in making this project a reality. Their donations have ensured this helipad is meeting today’s standards, continuing to improve patient outcomes by enabling quick and safe transfers to and from the hospital in critical situations when time is of the essence.”

Grace Broughton, Capital Project Manager at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, added: “When the HELP Appeal approached us about making vital upgrades to bring the existing facilities in line with the latest regulations and standards, we were delighted and so grateful for their commitment to fund the whole project. It’s meant that we can ensure the highest level of care and safety for both patients and staff.”

Glenfield Hospital helipad is the HELP Appeal’s first NHS hospital helipad to be funded in 2025 and its 55th in the UK since it was established.

Late last year the HELP Appeal funded an upgrade to a helipad at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
