US-based Sikorsky has been awarded a US$17.9-million contract modification by the US Marine Corps for work on the H-53K helicopter
Sikorsky will provide logistics, program management, training configuration management and sustaining engineering support for the K-53K under the contract modification. The contract can also fund support equipment.
The CH-53K King Stallion is a cargo helicopter that has been in development since 2006 and will replace the CH-53-E Super Stallion Fleet. It is designed to be faster and more fuel efficient.
The development was initially meant to reach operational capacity by 2015, but has been delayed. One reason for the delay was a defect that allowed exhaust gases to get sucked back into the engine.
More than half of the work on the contract will be performed in Shelton, Connecticut and other work will be performed in New River, NC, Patuxent River, MD and Bohemia, NY.
