South Tyrol rescue service launches new five-bladed helicopter
The air medical and rescue aircraft is based out of Laas, and offers increased maneuverability and the ability to carry 150kg of additional weight
Helicopter rescue services in Italy’s mountainous South Tyrol region have begun regular operations using a five-bladed Airbus BK117-D3 helicopter, designated Pelikan 3.
The aircraft, operated from a base in Laas, replaces a four-bladed Airbus H145 which previously operated under the Pelikan 3 callsign, and which was used as additional support during peak periods.
The BK117-D3 reportedly offers improvements to maneuverability, safety and performance compared with its predecessor – vital improvements when operating within the mountainous Vinschgau Valley, where rescue missions can take place at up to 4km above sea level.
The aircraft also offers less vibration and enables an additional 150kg of carry weight, offering crews the ability to respond to a wider range of emergencies, including to bariatric patients, as well as providing greater comfort to onboard patients and crew.
