Stanford Medicine’s Life Flight program announces new upgrade
Its new Airbus H145 D3 aircraft expands in-flight treatment capabilities and improves fast, safe transport of patients in critical condition in northern California
Stanford Medicine’s Life Flight program has unveiled a major upgrade with the addition of a new helicopter: the Airbus H145 D3. As one of the most advanced medical helicopters available – and the only one of its kind in California – it marks a significant step forward in critical care transport.
The new aircraft is built for demanding environments, maintaining lift and stability at higher altitudes and in hotter conditions. It can land on highways, rooftop helipads, and mountain clearings, with a smaller rotor diameter and improved hover performance enabling safe operation in confined spaces.
Inside, hospital-grade equipment – including vital signs monitor, ventilator, and up to 12 IV pumps – is mounted on interchangeable racks for quick reconfiguration. The expanded cabin accommodates standard tools like a defibrillator and ultrasound, as well as advanced systems such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Impella, and a neonatal incubator.
A bearingless, five-blade rotor system reduces vibration for a quieter ride, enhancing patient comfort and improving conditions for the crew, especially during invasive procedures.
New Zealand’s Search and Rescue Services recently ordered four Airbus H145 helicopters.
