STARS trials virtual care scheme

The initiative will allow STARS transport physicians to connect with local healthcare providers during active missions via a secure video link.

This will allow critically ill or injured patients to receive an “immediate assessment, stabilization, and treatment support” at the scene. This information can then be used to support the patient while in transit, and can also be sent ahead to the receiving hospital, allowing them to decide on a best course of treatment in advance.

The program will employ GoodSAM, a video streaming platform for emergency services. STARS stated that the platform is already in use by other Canadian providers, such as the British Columbia Emergency Health Services.

“This new tool is allowing us to provide care more precisely and timely,” said STARS’ Base Medical Director for Regina and Saskatoon, Dr Dallas Pearson. “When I am consulted, I can see the problem directly, rather than having someone describe it to me over the phone – especially when they can often be in the midst of dealing with a very critical situation.”

“The Saskatchewan Health Authority is actively expanding virtual services across the healthcare system in a connected and cohesive manner,” said Dr Vern Behl, Senior Medical Information Officer with SHA Digital Health focused on Virtual Care. “The partnership with STARS is a natural next step in ensuring patients can get the timely care they need, regardless of their circumstances or location.”

STARS also announced the completion of its first ever helicopter neonatal transport in February of this year.
