Taiwan NASC signs major AS365 modernization deal with Airbus Helicopters

Taiwan’s National Airborne Service Corps (NASC), under the Ministry of the Interior, has signed a major modernization agreement with Airbus Helicopters to upgrade its AS365 fleet, Asian Aviation reports. The program is designed to boost performance and bring the aircraft in line with the latest international safety standards.

The recapitalization plan covers the upgrade of NASC’s four in-service helicopters to the AS365 N3+ standard, alongside the delivery of five fully refurbished, pre-owned AS365 aircraft to form a harmonized fleet. Enhancements will include a night vision goggles (NVG)-compatible glass cockpit, an advanced autopilot system with search and rescue mode, and upgraded radio and communications equipment. Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2028, with completion expected by the end of 2030.

According to Asian Aviation, the modernization will strengthen NASC’s ability to perform critical missions, including maritime rescue, disaster relief, reconnaissance, and air medical evacuation. By standardizing the fleet, the service aims to increase operational efficiency and mission readiness.

NASC’s AS365 helicopters have been in service since 1990 and have accumulated 70,000 flight hours, carrying out more than 37,000 lifesaving missions. Over that time, the aircraft have played a direct role in rescuing more than 2,000 people.

“The AS365 helicopters have proven critical in our rescue missions, enabling us to respond swiftly and effectively during emergencies,” Ching Yen-Yuan, Director-General of NASC, told Asian Aviation. “This timely fleet modernization in alignment with the international safety standards ensures that the NASC remains at the forefront of rescue operations, equipped with the best assets and capabilities to serve the public.”

Vincent Dubrule, Head of Asia-Pacific at Airbus Helicopters, added: “The AS365 fleet has been the backbone of NASC’s operations, delivering safe missions for more than 35 years. This recapitalization program demonstrates Airbus’ capability to deliver practical and customized solutions that meet exacting operational requirements. By upgrading NASC’s helicopters to AS365 N3+ standards, the harmonized fleet will enhance operational capability, reliability and safety, while delivering mission success for many years to come.”

The fleet will also be supported under Airbus’ Fleet Availability program, which covers maintenance management and end-to-end logistics support to ensure high operational availability.

Last year, NASC helicopters reached remote areas of Taroko National Park to rescue stranded visitors after a 7.4-magnitude quake killed at least 13 and injured over 1,100.
