Telia acquires EU funding for 5G projects
The funds will support five Telia-led projects trialing new technologies, including the use of drones for emergency response
Swedish telecommunications firm Telia has secured funding from the European Union (EU) for five 5G-related projects across the country, including to test the viability of related technologies in the healthcare sector.
One project, which has received €6.4 million, will be used to explore how 5G services can be used in Stockholm to increase patient safety, quality of services, and accessibility to healthcare.
This will include the use of drones to carry defibrillators and provide aerial video surveillance of accidents, as well as exploring how video communication between ambulances and emergency departments can be improved.
A further four projects, which will focus on strategic parts of northern Sweden, have received a combined total of €300 million. These projects will look at the potential use of 5G-enabled technology, including drones, in the healthcare, transport, logistics, and agriculture sectors.
Nokia signed a contract with telecom firm Citymesh to develop the ‘world’s first nationwide drone network’ in Belgium in mid-2023.
