Tijuana purchases new police helicopter
The city of Tijuana, Mexico, has purchased a new US$1.2 million police helicopter, according to an announcement by Mayor Montserrat Caballero
The helicopter – of an unspecified type – will be used by the city’s Security and Citizens Protection Department for municipal policing, and is scheduled for delivery by 1 October.
The aircraft will be the first crewed rotorcraft operated by the city’s police since November 2017, when its last helicopter, known as Pegasus, was involved in a crash, killing both pilots.
The helicopter cost approximately 20 million pesos (US$1.2 million), and will also be used to provide search and rescue and air ambulance services when needed.
Across the border in the US state of New Mexico, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office resumed its own helicopter operations in December 2023, having suspended them after a fatal crash in July 2022.
