University of Kentucky tests drone deliveries for medical supplies in rural Appalachia

A research team from the University of Kentucky is exploring how drones could help improve access to medical supplies in rural areas of Appalachia

The pilot project, aimed at reaching patients in remote communities, was a joint effort between the University of Kentucky’s Center of Excellence in Rural Health, the USA Drone Port, and Kentucky Homeplace. The pilot was funded by the UK Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Science (UK-CARES).

Dr Ellen Hahn, former Director of UK-Cares, said the concept emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many Appalachian residents struggled to obtain personal protective equipment (PPE).

“We thought this might be an opportunity to see if we could collaborate with the Drone Port to get them what they needed because many of them live in remote areas of Appalachia,” Dr Hahn told local broadcast service WEKU.

The study targeted existing patients of Kentucky Homeplace, focusing on individuals in their mid-60s with chronic illnesses. Drones delivered essential items like masks and gloves directly to their homes.

Dr Hahn noted that the pilot served as a proof of concept, marking the first time the team had delivered supplies directly to patients. She said that of the 11 existing patients at Kentucky Homeplace, all were on average in their mid-60s and being treated for chronic illness.

Patient response was largely positive. According to Dr Hahn, 60% of participants said they would be open to receiving drone deliveries again, and 80% expressed interest in scheduling future PPE deliveries by drone.

Looking ahead, Dr Hahn hopes the project can be expanded to include the delivery of medications and other essential health supplies, easing the burden on rural residents, who often face long travel times to reach healthcare providers.

The initiative highlights the growing potential of drone technology to bridge healthcare access gaps in isolated regions.

The global medical drones market is forecast to be worth US$1.2 billion by 2032.‎
