Members of the US Coast Guard have, for the first time, missed a paycheck due to a government shutdown. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Karl Schultz wrote an open letter to active duty guardsman and women on 15 January, in which he acknowledged the strain the lack of paycheck is having on working families. “I recognize the anxiety and uncertainty this situation places on you and your family, and we are working closely with service organizations on your behalf.” He continued: ““The strength of our Service has, and always be, our people. You have proven time and again the ability to rise above adversity. Stay the course, stand the watch, and serve with pride. You are not, and will not, be forgotten.”
The Coast Guard has been affected by the shutdown because it is funded by the Department of Homeland Security, whereas other military branches receive their funding from the Department of Defense, which remains open.
