The United States Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) has developed an initiative to formally adopt the practice of Crew Resource Management (CRM) throughout the helicopter industry

The USHST developed a recommended practice report that targets the industry sectors of air ambulance, aerial observation, firefighting, utilities, law enforcement and news gathering. In a statement, the USHST said this was because many interdisciplinary crews have not necessarily received CRM training, for example nurses and doctors.

The report intends to reduce accidents by developing and disseminating the general concepts of CRM which are modified for interdisciplinary crews that helicopter operators can adopt and teach their crews.

In the statement, the USHST said: “Our goal is to reduce accidents. Essentially, every person on the helicopter is a vital member of the crew, and every crewmember is a resource to ensure the safety of the flight.”

The report is titled Detection and Management of Risk Level Changes During Flight by Pilots and Non Flying Crew and can be found on the IHSF website.
