WAAC reports 3,544 emergency missions in 2021
2021 was the Welsh air ambulance provider’s first full year of 24/7 operation
The Wales Air Ambulance Charity (WAAC) has reported that it carried out 3,544 emergency missions in 2021, of which over 10 per cent (372) were aged 17 or under.
This included 1,870 missions attended to by air and 1,674 missions responded to by road. In addition, the majority of incidents (2,004) were trauma related, of with the remaining 1,540 being due to medical issues.
2021 was the first full year in which WAAC provided 24/7 care across its operating region, having moved to ‘around the clock’ operation in December 2020.
According to Professor David Lockey, Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in Wales (EMRTS Cymru) National Director, said: “Last year was a challenge for everyone as Covid-19 continued to impact on our service and our people. Nevertheless, despite those challenges, we were able to continue our lifesaving work – as we have done throughout the pandemic. The reason for this is the commitment shown by everyone connected to the service and the people of Wales, for which I cannot thank you all enough.”
WAAC now operates on a budget of £8 million per year
The organization says it now needs to raise around £8 million per year to maintain its usual coverage. Funding for helicopter operation is currently raised through donations from the Welsh public, while medical capabilities onboard are delivered through a partnership between the Charity, the Welsh government and NHS Wales. This partnership was also responsible for the creation of EMRTS Cymru in 2015.
“The support that our charity receives is incredible,” said Dr Sue Barnes, Wales Air Ambulance Chief Executive. “From everyone who raises money for us, to our army of volunteers – they are all lifesavers. I would also like to thank our Trustees, charity colleagues, partners, medics and pilots for their passion, determination and dedication to the people of our country, and our focus on serving Wales and saving lives.”
