Washington State’s Vashon Island to build new emergency helipad

Vashon Island in Washington State, USA, is set to receive a new emergency helicopter landing pad following a US$350,000 donation from the Seattle Indian Health Board (SIHB), in a project designed to improve access for air medical crews and reduce transfer times for critically ill patients.

The new helipad will be constructed at Vashon Municipal Airport and is expected to be completed by the end of September. It will replace an existing grass landing area that emergency responders say can become difficult to use during wet weather and low-light conditions.

The project includes a 40x40ft concrete helipad, paved access for ambulances and stretchers, pilot-controlled floodlighting, on-site weather monitoring equipment, and a new instrument approach intended to improve access for Airlift Northwest helicopters during poor visibility.

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue Chief Bill McLaughlin said the island typically recorded two to three helicopter medical evacuations each month, with patients requiring urgent transport because the island has no hospital or critical emergency care facilities.

Airport officials estimate the improvements could reduce some patient transfer times by 15–20 minutes by allowing ambulance crews to move patients directly to the aircraft over a paved surface rather than across uneven grass.

The upgraded weather reporting and instrument approach are also expected to improve operational reliability during adverse weather.

Elsewhere in the sector, King County recently secured more than $1 million in federal funding to upgrade one of its hoist-equipped rescue helicopters, supporting future search and rescue, disaster response, and aerial firefighting missions.
