Gallery: Air and Marine Operations on one of the biggest days in US politics
The aircrews from the Air and Marine Operations (AMO) of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) prepare for operations during the 60th presidential inauguration in the US capital city, Washington, DC
As the 45th President of the USA prepared to become the 47th, the crews of the AMO also prepared themselves to monitor and face any threats that may be present at the beginning of a new era of American politics.
At its disposal, the AMO operates Airbus AS350/H125 A-Star and Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The H125 is used for aerial patrol and surveillance, and is prioritized in metropolitan areas for its maneuverability within congested airspace and its suite of sensors. The Black Hawk, on the other hand, is a multi-mission aircraft that is used often in search and rescue operations due to its hoist and spacious capacity; it is further used for insertion and extraction of personnel, and it also comes with an electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) set of sensors. Both craft were used to ensure that there were no disturbances during the handover of power, and were accessible in case of emergencies.
Wider missions by the AMO include working with partner agencies to protect the security of the nation along its borders and throughout the national airspace with its rotary-wing assets and with a fleet of fixed-wing aircraft, uncrewed aerial vehicles, and marine vessels. With partner agencies, the AMO seeks to predict, detect, identify, classify, track, deter, and interdict threats along the border of the USA, and to safeguard the country through the coordinated application of aviation and maritime law enforcement resources across the air, sea, and land. This involves detecting and deterring illicit border crossings; interdicting targets; conducting investigative activities; collecting intelligence; performing patrols and surveillance; and preventing the import/export of illegal merchandise and contraband.
