Washoe County’s RAVENS: The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Regional Aviation Enforcement Unit
Founded in 1996, the Regional Aviation Enforcement Unit (RAVEN) covers almost 17,000km2, including Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe. One full-time pilot and three part-time pilots currently fly a selection of aircraft, including two OH-58A+ Kiowa helicopters that previously operated with the US Army. Also in the lineup are two Bell HH-1H Huey helicopters, which all contribute to law enforcement, firefighting and search and rescue duties.
However, this merely scratches the surface of their contribution to the local region. Performing on static displays, overwatching VIP transport, Department of Homeland Security missions and counter-drug operations are all part of the routine. With a special team of unpaid volunteer professionals having operated for more than 50 years, the Hasty crew is another invaluable asset. As the only aerial law-enforcement unit in Northern Nevada, here’s hoping the RAVENS continue to fly high
