Mike Holman Foundation Trust cadet begins hoist training with HMTS

George Hancock, a cadet with the Mike Holman Foundation Trust, has begun his helicopter hoist training using the Bluedrop HMTS. With a background in paramedicine, George is applying his medical expertise to master hoisting techniques under the guidance of the instructional team at Air Rescue Training & Simulation (ARTS).

To date, George completed over 10 hours of structured simulation-based training, focusing on overland hoisting scenarios involving cliffs and altitude. These virtual environments are challenging, requiring precise coordination and safety measures. George then progressed into the maritime modules upon his return a short time later, preparing for open-water rescues with additional complexities such as sea state and weather conditions.

Simulation-based training is delivered through ARTS’ Bespoke Optimised Learning Dynamics (BOLD) system, a 36-module framework tailored to different operational needs and environments, leveraging the capabilities of the HMTS. The BOLD system’s flexibility provides cadets like George with a wide range of rescue scenarios, ensuring they gain the knowledge and confidence to perform hoisting procedures efficiently.

George has been introduced to standard voice marshalling procedures, gained experience in preparing and delivering a hoist brief, and is learning to coordinate with crew members during simulated hoisting tasks. These tasks test both individual competency and team coordination under pressure. Training is guided by experienced search and rescue hoist operators, emphasizing good habits, clear communication, and situational awareness from the outset.

While George is still in the early stages of his development, simulation-based training provides him with the opportunity to build core skills in a controlled, measured way. These methods ensure cadets develop not only technical expertise but also the ability to make quick decisions under pressure, a vital skill for helicopter rescue operations. The ultimate aim is to prepare George for potential future roles in actual helicopter hoist environments, where competence, confidence, and safety are paramount.

The HMTS has already proven to be an invaluable asset during its 24-month placement at the ARTS facility in Essex. The high-fidelity system has played a key role in training and assessment for various external clients, including overseas military and civil customers. By providing realistic, immersive training scenarios, the HMTS has contributed to developing highly skilled personnel, ensuring both safety and operational efficiency in real-world rescue missions.

Simulation-based training is meant to expand where new trainees like George as well as experienced helicopter hoist operators can hone their skills and improve their proficiency in a safe and cost-efficient environment in preparation for their check flight.
