Armed Forces of Malta expands Air Wing

Malta’s Air Wing boosts its operational reach and readiness with new helicopter and maritime patrol aircraft acquisitions

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) is strengthening its aerial capabilities with the signing of two new procurement contracts aimed at enhancing operational readiness across the Central Mediterranean.

AFM has signed an agreement with Leonardo Helicopters for the acquisition of an additional AW139 helicopter, expanding the Air Wing’s rotary fleet to four aircraft. The AW139 plays a critical role in border control, maritime surveillance, law enforcement, and search and rescue (SAR) operations. This latest addition supports the ongoing standardization of the helicopter fleet and will allow the Air Wing to better sustain continuous operations across its diverse mission set. Leonardo Helicopters, a long-standing partner of AFM for over a decade, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Forces’ continued development.

In parallel, AFM has also signed a contract with Aerodata for a new King Air Maritime Patrol Aircraft, further reinforcing the standardization of the Air Wing’s fixed-wing fleet. The aircraft will be primarily deployed for border control, maritime surveillance, law enforcement, and SAR missions. As the fourth King Air to enter service, it will significantly enhance the Air Wing’s ability to meet increasing operational demands and safeguard security and safety in the region. Aerodata has similarly confirmed its ongoing support to the Armed Forces of Malta.

Together, these acquisitions mark an important investment in Malta’s aerial surveillance and rescue capabilities, ensuring the AFM Air Wing remains well equipped to address current and future challenges.

Meanwhile, Faroe Islands-based Atlantic Airways Aviation Academy has been awarded a three-year contract by the Maltese government to provide pilot training for the Leonardo AW139.
