Esther Zermatten appointed CEO of Air-Glaciers
The Swiss helicopter operator will change leadership in December as Bernard Vogel prepares to retire following six years at the company’s helm
Air-Glaciers has appointed Esther Zermatten as its next CEO, with current Chief Executive Bernard Vogel set to retire at the end of 2026.
Zermatten will take over on 1 December following a transition period with Vogel, who has led the Swiss helicopter operator since 2020.
Based in Sion, Air-Glaciers conducts helicopter rescue and air ambulance missions alongside passenger transport, aerial work, and other aviation operations in Switzerland and internationally.
Zermatten joins the operator following more than 25 years with the Schindler Group, where her roles included global responsibility for repair management. She holds a Master of Science in Business Administration specializing in Innovation Management and has worked in Switzerland and France.
Air-Glaciers Chairman Philipp Perren said Zermatten brought experience leading teams in demanding operating environments, alongside a focus on quality and safety.
“Esther Zermatten brings a solid track record of leading teams in demanding environments, a strong commitment to quality and safety, and a deep connection to the Valais region,” he added.
Vogel took charge of Air-Glaciers in 2020 and has since overseen a reorganization of the business, including investment in its aircraft fleet and infrastructure and changes to its management structure.
“These six years as head of Air-Glaciers have been a demanding yet exciting challenge,” Vogel said. “Together, we have transformed the company, strengthened its financial stability, and laid the groundwork for the investments needed to secure its future.”
Zermatten said she intended to support the continued development of the operator while maintaining its existing public-service role.
“I look forward to getting to know the company from the inside, meeting its employees, and contributing to its growth while upholding the values that have built its reputation,” she said.
In other news, Helicopter Institute has appointed retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Britton as President as the company expands its military, government, and public safety helicopter training programs.
