FAA approves electric air conditioning for Enstrom 280FX
FAA certification adds electric cockpit cooling to the Enstrom 280FX ahead of customer deliveries from October 2026
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved installation of Kelly Aerospace Thermal Systems’ THERMACOOL electric air conditioning system on Enstrom 280FX helicopters.
The installation is covered by a supplemental type certificate (STC) held by Kelly Aerospace Thermal Systems, giving operators a certified option for cockpit cooling on the light single-engine helicopter.
The electric system is designed to provide cooling for pilots and passengers during ground operations and flights in warmer climates. For special mission operators, the option could be relevant where crews spend extended periods on the ground or operate in hot environments.
Enstrom said the certification forms part of ongoing development of the 280FX, with the company also working toward FAA certification of an updated fuel system.
“This certification is another example of our commitment to continuously improving the ownership experience,” said Chuck Wade, Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Customer Excellence at Enstrom Helicopter Corporation.
“While we’re excited to bring this new comfort option to our customers today, it’s just one of several advancements underway for the 280FX. We’re looking forward to sharing additional certification milestones in the months ahead.”
Enstrom, based in the USA, is accepting orders for new 280FX helicopters, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in October 2026. The latest certification adds a climate-control option to the aircraft as the manufacturer continues to update the platform for operators worldwide.
