Helicopter Institute expands Navy training with new TH-66 SAGE platform

Helicopter Institute (HI) is set to modernize US Navy helicopter training with the introduction of the Robinson TH-66 SAGE training platform under the Navy’s Contractor Operated Pilot Training – Rotary (COPT-R) program, based at Meacham Airport in Fort Worth, Texas.

The move expands HI’s existing partnership with Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC) and marks a major step toward replacing legacy aircraft such as the Bell 206B3 with the more cost-effective, turbine-powered R66-based trainer.

Already in use in the US Army’s Part 141 Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) demonstration in Marianna, Florida, the TH-66 SAGE aims to enhance training value by offering greater reliability and lower operating costs. The platform’s efficiency allows for more instructional flight hours and improved student throughput, while maintaining a focus on safety and capability.

The partnership also benefits from direct factory support from RHC’s Torrance, California, facility.

Tailored for military flight training, the TH-66 SAGE provides the capability and reliability needed to prepare Navy helicopter crews for challenging missions such as combat search and rescue (SAR), medevac, and maritime operations.

Earlier this year, Robinson partnered with Operation Helo.
