Medical drone trial shows promise for faster care in remote New Zealand

A pioneering Matakana Island trial shows how rapid drone-delivered medical supplies could transform healthcare access for New Zealand’s most remote communities

A successful medical drone trial in New Zealand is offering fresh hope for faster healthcare access in remote communities. The demonstration, carried out by drone company VertiLink in partnership with the University of Auckland and Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi, delivered medical supplies to Matakana Island in under four minutes during a simulated emergency at Te Kutaroa Marae.

Speaking on Nine to Noon on Radio New Zealand (RNZ), VertiLink CEO Charlie Nelson called the achievement “a groundbreaking milestone” that could make a meaningful difference for the island’s 500 residents. The flight marked the culmination of two years of research into how uncrewed aircraft might support isolated populations.

Nelson said the scenario involved a high-trauma incident – “a very narrow window of time for this person’s outcome of survival”. First responders were dispatched alongside the drone to compare response times and assess whether rapid aerial delivery could influence patient outcomes.

According to RNZ, the aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of 95kg and can carry payloads up to 40kg. A detachable underslung box holds medical supplies and opens automatically on landing. The system can also be fitted with a winch for situations where landing is unsafe, allowing teams to lower equipment directly to the scene.

Nelson said the next step was refining the technology with input from local communities. “It may not look like the same solution for other communities, so we’re continuing to engage with our research partners, community and iwi,” he said.

Beyond emergency response, the drone could assist with routine health needs, from prescription deliveries to transporting blood samples to mainland laboratories. Nelson told RNZ the project aimed to reduce the cost and time burden for residents, who currently must travel off-island for basic services. “We’re looking at how efficient you can make these services so the cost profile is reduced,” he said.

IMS New Zealand recently teamed up with Boost Human External Cargo Systems to bring advanced aerial firefighting equipment to local operators.
