Metro Aviation nears H160 EMS certification with global air ambulance push

As certification nears, the H160’s EMS configuration signals a push toward more versatile, long-range air ambulance operations for both US and international providers

Metro Aviation, a provider of completion services for helicopters, is advancing development of its supplemental type certificate (STC) for the Airbus H160, with approval expected in June 2026.

The milestone reflects ongoing collaboration between Metro Aviation and Airbus Helicopters to bring an emergency medical service (EMS)-configured H160 to market, optimized for the demands of air medical operations.

Metro recently displayed a Memorial Hermann-branded H160 at Verticon in Atlanta, Georgia, which it said served as the primary conforming aircraft for the program. Although the display aircraft was tailored to the US market, it represented a flexible platform aimed at global operators. Metro said it was in discussions with domestic and international customers on the H160’s role in advanced air ambulance missions. A second airframe for another customer is currently being completed with a similar configuration.

The H160 is expected to expand service reach and improve the transport of high-acuity patients, including neonatal and pediatric cases, over longer distances.

Metro noted that while US operators favor integrated onboard systems, many international providers rely on ‘carry-on’ medical equipment. Alongside integrated features such as liquid oxygen and inverters, the company is evaluating a more flexible configuration.

Following STC approval, Metro plans to offer a comprehensive H160 interior installation kit for global operators and completion centers.

Metro Aviation recently partnered with three new air medical providers.
