Metropolitan Nashville Police Department opens new aviation base
The Department has opened a new aviation facility, upgrading its helicopter operations with expanded hangar space and improved infrastructure to support emergency response and public safety missions
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has officially cut the ribbon on a new 22,000ft2 facility at John C Tune Airport, alongside city officials and representatives from the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.
The new base marks a move from the unit’s previous location at the Department’s training academy in the city’s Tucker Road neighborhood, relocating aviation operations into a dedicated airport environment for the first time.
The facility includes 10,000ft2 of hangar space and 12,000 ft2 of office accommodation, providing expanded capacity for the unit’s eight pilots, helicopter mechanics, and tactical flight officers.
The aviation unit plays a central role in police operations across Nashville, supporting ground teams during high-risk incidents, searches, and pursuits.
Helicopters are used to track fleeing vehicles from the air, reducing the need for dangerous ground chases.
According to the Department, the aviation unit directly assisted in the apprehension of 817 suspects in 2025, underlining its operational impact.
For the helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) sector, the development reflects a wider trend towards purpose-built aviation infrastructure to improve aircraft readiness, maintenance efficiency, and response times.
Industry operators have increasingly pointed to airport-based facilities as critical to reducing downtime and improving coordination with wider emergency response networks.
The new base is expected to improve aircraft availability and streamline operations, supporting faster deployment across Davidson County.
