NATO nations launch initiative for multinational Airbus A400M fleet

The proposed multinational fleet aims to strengthen strategic airlift, medical evacuation, disaster response, and interoperability across Europe

Seven NATO member states have launched an initiative to develop a multinational Airbus A400M fleet, with the aircraft expected to support strategic airlift, medical evacuation, disaster relief, and other shared military air mobility missions.

The High Visibility Project, announced during the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, Turkey, brings together Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Turkey, and the UK.

The initiative is intended to address strategic airlift capability gaps through a shared fleet model based on multinational ownership, operations, and support.

The A400M initiative builds on the Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) Fleet (MMF), under which participating nations share access to a fleet of Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft.

Under the proposal, participating countries will explore a range of collaborative arrangements, including shared aircraft operations, maintenance, training, infrastructure, and procurement.

For the air medical community, one of the key capabilities identified for the aircraft is medical evacuation (medevac). The Airbus A400M can be configured to transport critically ill or injured patients while carrying medical teams and equipment over long distances, making it suitable for military casualty evacuation, humanitarian response, and disaster relief operations.

The aircraft’s multi-role capability also enables it to conduct strategic airlift, air-to-air refueling, and aerial firefighting missions, providing operators with flexibility across a range of military and civil contingency operations.

Ben Bridge, Chairman of Airbus Defence and Space UK, said the aircraft had become an important element of European military air mobility. “The selection of the A400M for this multinational fleet underlines its key strategic airlift capabilities,” he noted.

Separately, NATO confirmed that Finland had joined the MMF, becoming the ninth participating nation in the shared Airbus A330 MRTT program. The fleet currently operates nine aircraft, with a total of 12 on order, and has supported military deployments, evacuation operations, and multinational exercises since entering service in 2020.
