Officials warn of “dangerous situation” in Nevada as wildfires escalate
The blaze broke out amid a rare September heatwave on Saturday around 14:30 hrs
A wildfire broke out in Davis Creek Regional Park, located in Washoe Valley south of Reno, in the US state of Nevada, at around 14:30 hrs on 7 September 2024. As of yesterday, officials estimated the fire to have burned 5,596 acres, which triggered between 12,000 and 14,000 evacuations and school closures in Washoe Valley.
Parts of south Reno remained under evacuation notice until Monday. Power outages in the area have left some homes, business and traffic signals without electricity.
Nevada officials warned in a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday that residents in western Reno needed to be prepared to evacuate as a change in fire weather on Wednesday was expected to bring about a particularly “dangerous situation” a “step above a red flag warning”.
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest are in unified command in management of the fire. Cooperating agencies include Reno Fire Department, Sparks Fire Department, Carson City Fire Department, CAL FIRE, East Fork Fire Protection District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, the Bureau of Land Management, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, NV Energy, and the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Climate change is thought to be leading to more frequent, severe and longer-lasting heatwaves while also contributing to an increase in wildfires in the West.
