Proon-Tech and ELSA Industry partner on UAV technology for wildfire response

The companies plan to combine aerospace engineering, UAV capabilities, and biotechnology to develop aerial systems for wildfire and emergency operations

Proon-Tech and ELSA Industry have formed a strategic partnership to develop and test UAV-based capabilities for wildfire mitigation and emergency response.

The Romanian companies plan to combine Proon-Tech’s biotechnology and land-intelligence systems with ELSA Industry’s aviation, uncrewed aerial vehicle/system (UAV/UAS), engineering, and systems-integration expertise.

A key focus will be integrating Proon-Tech’s wildfire technology with suitable UAV platforms and developing methods for deploying and applying the technology from the air.

The companies said they intended to conduct controlled field demonstrations and testing under representative environmental conditions, while developing deployment protocols and standard operating procedures for potential operational use.

The work will also assess how the technologies could integrate with existing command-and-control structures used by organizations operating in the field.

ELSA Industry, founded in Bucharest, Romania, in 2020, develops composite components and structures for aircraft and is designing the ELSA-H, a modular, heavy-lift electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) and hybrid-electric VTOL cargo UAV with an interchangeable payload bay and powertrain.

Proon-Tech develops biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI)-supported field-intelligence technology for land management, wildfire resilience, and critical infrastructure. The company is currently piloting a bio-based fire-suppression material with local firefighting authorities.

Katrin Mayrhofer, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of ELSA Industry, said: “Wildland fire and critical infrastructure demand exactly that attention to detail. With ELSA’s aviation, UAV, and composite engineering alongside Proon-Tech’s understanding of the land, we can bring aerospace-grade rigor to problems that deserve it.”

The partnership will initially target wildfire prevention, mitigation, and response, as well as the protection of critical infrastructure and operations in remote and difficult-to-access areas.

Potential operational partners include firefighting and wildland-fire services, emergency and disaster-response organizations, civil protection authorities, and critical infrastructure operators.

The companies said they intended to work with operators during development, using field testing and end-user feedback to determine how the technologies could be incorporated into existing emergency-response operations.
