Smith Myers unveils embedded AI capability for airborne mission systems
Smith Myers adds secure AI decision support to ARTEMIS MPDLS, enhancing airborne SAR and special mission operations
UK-based Smith Myers Communications has announced ARTEMIS AI, a new artificial intelligence (AI) capability for its ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Detection & Location System (MPDLS), at the Farnborough International Airshow. The technology is designed to provide secure, onboard decision support for mission-critical operations without relying on cloud connectivity.
The company said ARTEMIS AI uses an embedded large language model (LLM) operating within a closed system, allowing data to remain under operator control while supporting missions in disconnected or contested environments.
“ARTEMIS AI represents the next evolution of operational capability,” said Andrew Munro, Managing Director of Smith Myers. “By embedding intelligent decision support directly into the ARTEMIS platform, we are enabling operators to achieve more with less effort, while maintaining complete control of the system at all times.”
The technology builds on the existing applications of MPDLS technology, particularly in search and rescue (SAR) operations where locating mobile phones can help identify people in distress. ARTEMIS systems can detect and locate mobile devices from aircraft, providing crews with additional information to support search areas, prioritize resources, and improve situational awareness during time-critical responses.
ARTEMIS AI is intended to assist operators through natural language interaction, mission planning support, system optimization, health monitoring, and post-mission analysis. The company said the system could identify anomalies, recommend actions, and assist with troubleshooting while keeping human operators responsible for final decisions.
“ARTEMIS AI has been developed with a clear philosophy: AI should enhance human performance, not replace it,” said Munro. “The system is designed to work alongside operators, providing actionable insights and intelligent assistance while ensuring human decision-makers remain firmly in control.”
