UK approves further NPAS helicopter investment to strengthen national air support capability
Further investment in UK police aviation will extend the National Police Air Service fleet renewal program, reinforcing long-term airborne operational resilience across England and Wales
The UK government has approved funding for two additional helicopters for the National Police Air Service (NPAS), expanding the national fleet replacement program aimed at modernising airborne policing capability across England and Wales.
The announcement, confirmed by UK Minister of State for Policing and Crime Sarah Jones MP (pictured), builds on the seven aircraft already on order under the existing renewal program.
Together, the expanded procurement program is designed to replace aging helicopters with newer platforms, improving operational reliability, availability, and service continuity across a 24/7 national air support network.
The additional aircraft will be delivered through the established procurement framework with Airbus Helicopters, maintaining consistency with the existing H135 acquisition program and supporting efficiency and delivery continuity.
NPAS said the investment reflected continued confidence in its role within UK policing and its ability to deliver specialist airborne support to forces across a geographically dispersed operational landscape.
Chief Superintendent Fiona Gaffney, NPAS Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Manager, welcomed the announcement, highlighting the importance of sustained investment in capability modernisation.
“This additional investment demonstrates continued confidence in NPAS and the value it provides to policing and the public,” she commented. “It reflects the dedication of our people and the strength of our partnerships with BlueLight Commercial and Airbus Helicopters.”
The first aircraft from the wider fleet replacement program are expected to enter operational service from mid-2027, with a phased transition planned alongside the retirement of older helicopters.
A parallel disposal program is underway to remove nine aging aircraft from service, ensuring the fleet transition maintains operational continuity throughout the rollout period.
NPAS currently provides borderless air support to police forces across England and Wales, delivering capabilities including search support, surveillance, and rapid response to critical incidents.
