UK helicopter support deal boosts Chinook readiness and jobs

An £879 million contract has been awarded to Boeing Defence UK to provide integrated support for the UK’s rotary-wing fleet, sustaining more than 1,200 jobs across the country and reinforcing operational readiness.

The three-year agreement brings maintenance, logistics, training, and technical services for both the Royal Air Force’s Chinook heavy-lift helicopters and the British Army’s Apache fleet under a single framework for the first time, known as the Rotary Wing Enterprise. The move is intended to streamline support, reduce duplication, and improve fleet availability.

Around 700 roles will be supported within Boeing Defence UK at sites including Middle Wallop, Wattisham, Odiham, Bristol, Gosport, and Yeovil, with a further 500 jobs sustained across the wider supply chain.

For operators, the Chinook remains central to UK defense and humanitarian operations, particularly in casualty evacuation (casevac), troop movement, and resupply missions. Its ability to operate in austere and extreme environments – from Arctic conditions to desert deployments – makes it a critical platform for emergency and special missions.

The contract forms part of wider UK defense investment aimed at strengthening capability while supporting domestic industry, with the government positioning defense spending as a driver of economic growth alongside operational readiness.

Boeing recently received a contract from the US Air Force for four MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters.
