Vancouver Police to integrate drones into SAR operations
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has received approval from the Vancouver Police Board to use drones in its SAR and crime fighting operations
The VPD presented its 'Remotely Piloted Aerial System’ policy to the VPB on 19 September, which it developed in consultation with key stakeholder groups, including the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and the BC Civil Liberties Association. VPD noted that the new equipment would have many operational purposes, including investigation of motor vehicle collisions, crime scene analysis and reconstruction, SAR, and analysis of a disaster zone after a disaster or major event. However, the VPD asserted that it would not use the drones for surveillance.
“Remotely-piloted aerial systems, more commonly known as drones, are used by police agencies across the country,” said Steve Eely, Superintendent, Operations, VPD. “The system will greatly enhance our ability to keep the city safe. We are committed to full transparency with our policy for the use of the equipment and want Vancouver residents to fully understand when and how the equipment will be used.”
The total cost, including training officers in using the equipment, will be an estimated US$141,000 per year. Vancouver Police Foundation will be donating $100,000 to the programme in the first year.
