Pioneering aviation technology
Novel tools, updated technologies, and powerful partnerships have shown that this year has been critical to improving the ability of operators to perform special missions more effectively. Jon Adams compiles some of the relevant updates in aviation from the last 12 months
The innovations and advances of 2025 have continued to develop unrestrained. New platforms, new software, new partnerships, new tools, new trials – the list goes on. With the challenging global geopolitical landscape, novel solutions are being brought out to address issues and cross sectors with multiple functions that support the special missions industry as a whole. Furthermore, the changing behavior of wildfires is also encouraging specific growth and development of new tools to combat this increasing threat. 2025 has been an exciting year for new technology, and 2026 hints at being even more interesting.
New technology
Airbus
Airbus Helicopters introduced its H140. The H140 is a 3-tonne-class rotorcraft for the emergency medical services (EMS), passenger transport, and private and business aviation markets. The entry into service of the helicopter is planned in 2028 for the EMS segment.
“Introducing a new helicopter to the light twin-engine segment is a testimony to our commitment to meeting our customers’ evolving mission requirements, leveraging our R&T [research and technology] programs such as Bluecopter,” said Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “We worked hand in hand with our H135 customers to bring their additional requirements together in the H140’s efficient design. It enables customers to benefit from a bigger, mission-enhancing cabin space that was sized to an optimized engine performance for the best-in-class payload and range. We are proud to be able to offer our customers the most competitive choices,” he added.
The H140 features a wide range of innovations, including a new T-shaped tail boom with an optimized Fenestron that reduces sound levels, a five-blade bearingless main rotor, and new, powerful engines. The helicopter also features a larger cabin space, large windows, and optimized cabin layout that can accommodate up to six passengers comfortably. Designed with accessibility in mind, thanks to the large clamshell doors and the high tail boom, the H140’s rear loading capabilities allow the use of different types of stretcher systems, including intensive care ones and transport incubators, while its large sliding doors facilitate access to the cabin.
The H140 is powered by the Safran Arrius 2E 700shp engine. The two engines of the helicopter are managed by a dual-channel full-authority digital engine control (FADEC) system, guaranteeing unprecedented levels of performance in all-engines-operative (AEO) operations and considerable power reserves in one-engine-inoperative (OEI) scenarios.
Avinode
A new digital platform developed by Avinode aims to streamline air ambulance operations. The system enables real-time tracking of aircraft readiness, provider availability, and mission status. By offering a centralized platform for communication and data exchange, it seeks to reduce inefficiencies and improve coordination between medical assistance companies and air ambulance operators.

Centum
Centum has unveiled Cellair, an airborne system that enables fast, secure, and independent cellular communications during special missions. Cellair is designed to provide teams with the ability to deploy private cellular networks in minutes. The system supports voice and data exchange between field teams and is both lightweight and highly adaptable, making it suitable for integration across a range of platforms.
Cellair combines all essential services and protocols into a single, compact device, allowing users to establish fully functional, standalone networks without interfering with commercial cellular infrastructure.
“Cellair is aimed at critical situations when immediate communications are required, such as natural disasters, tactical missions, or emergency operations,” said Héctor Estévez, CEO of Centum. “It’s a versatile system that can be integrated into different types of aircraft and makes operations more efficient.”
Cellair has been selected as part of NASA’s Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program communications architecture contract.
Flightcell
Flightcell has introduced the Flightcell Controller, a compact and lightweight interface designed for controlling the Flightcell DZMx PLUS. The Controller is built to complement the DZMx, offering an enhanced display for better user experience.

- Intuitive soft-key menu system
- Night vision green compliant.
The Controller functions as the primary control unit for the Flightcell DZMx PLUS, supporting voice, messaging, data, and tracking capabilities. It connects to devices via RS232 and Ethernet, with the Ethernet connection offering fast and reliable data transfer, which is useful for larger file downloads.
In areas of the aircraft outside of the cockpit, additional Flightcell Controllers can be installed to manage Iridium satellite and cellular voice, data, and tracking functions. This setup is commonly used by EMS and search and rescue (SAR) operators who need to stay in contact with ground command centers while in the air.
Some operators are integrating the Controller with the DZMx PLUS to update the avionics in their rotorcraft fleets, such as Bristow Norway, which is using the interface with its S-92 fleet.

Robinson Helicopter Company
Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC) announced its first all-new aircraft in nearly 15 years, the R88, a larger helicopter designed to meet a wider range of mission requirements. The R88 represents a significant expansion of Robinson Helicopter’s product portfolio, addressing the increasing demand for versatile and cost-effective single-engine utility helicopters.
The highly configurable R88 is designed for a variety of missions, including aerial firefighting, air medical transport, utility work, and passenger transport. Its adaptable interior design allows for quick reconfiguration, supporting various mission needs.

RHC selected the Safran Arriel 2W engine for the R88 and is providing market-leading engine service and support as part of every aircraft purchase in the new Arriel 2W Serenity package, a first-of-its-kind offering for any commercial helicopter. The Serenity package will be included with the purchase of each new R88 helicopter. Serenity includes services such as unscheduled removals coverage for five years or 2,000 flying hours (whichever comes first), premium health monitoring, and advanced digital services.
Smith Myers
Smith Myers showcased two major enhancements to its ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Detection and Location System (MPDLS) at European Rotors 2025: the integration of a Stand-Alone Public Warning System (PWS) and an enhanced SARLOC feature. Together, these innovations strengthen ARTEMIS as a comprehensive solution for SAR and disaster response operations worldwide.
Stand-Alone PWS
The new Stand-Alone PWS enables emergency alerts to be broadcast directly to mobile phones – even in the absence of network connectivity – ensuring that critical, lifesaving messages reach affected populations in disaster zones and high-risk environments.
Key features include:

- Message content incorporating hazard type, geographic scope, urgency level, and safety instructions
- Fully standalone operation – no reliance on mobile network operators

Enhanced SARLOC feature
Also being showcased was the upgraded SARLOC capability within ARTEMIS MPDLS, designed to enhance two-way interaction with individuals in distress. SARLOC enables operators to selectively contact registered mobile phones in the coverage area, asking if assistance is required and whether users consent to share their location with first responders.
Each selected phone receives an SMS message containing a secure link to a website hosted on the ARTEMIS system. Upon clicking the link, recipients can opt to share their GPS coordinates directly with the SAR team. Once consent is given, the smartphone activates its GPS and securely transmits updated coordinates to ARTEMIS every 30 seconds, providing real-time positional data to aircraft or command centers.
Skytrac
Skytrac Systems has announced a new real-time health and usage monitoring system (HUMS) for the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter.
Developed in collaboration with Sikorsky, the system is designed to integrate with existing HUMS systems and leverage Skytrac’s Iridium Certus satellite communications systems.
Skytrac said the Certus integration would enable “in-flight exceedance detection and real-time alerting, with automated post-flight downloads of flight data monitoring (FDM) and HUMS data”.
Consequently, Skytrac explained, operators using the system would be able to prepare and initiate a response to an issue before the aircraft even landed.
The solution will be offered as a line-fit option for new orders of S-92s from Sikorsky, and as an aftermarket option directly from Skytrac.
TracPlus
TracPlus has launched FireFlyte,a new digital platform to support aerial firefighting operations.
The software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform is designed to offer real-time intelligence to firefighting agencies, improving coordination, safety, and resource management.
FireFlyte features four modules:
- Aerial fire – which tracks fill rates, drop counts, volumes, and mission performance
- Operations – which offers real-time flight monitoring, engine cycle tracking, automated daily summaries, and fleet performance insights
- Safety and risk management – which enhances risk mitigation through real-time standard operating procedure (SOP) deviation alerts, ADS-B integration, and 3D terrain analysis
- Finance – which provides accurate cost tracking, downtime monitoring, and financial insights.
The platform is cloud-based and hardware-agnostic, allowing it to integrate with existing tracking systems, application programming interfaces (APIs), and data feeds.

Integration
Axnes and Precision Helicopters
Axnes, a manufacturer of wireless communications solutions, has announced that its PNG Wireless Intercom System (WICS) has been installed on two AS332 L1 Super Pumas operated by Precision Helicopters.
The system will be used to enhance the operational capabilities of the two aircraft as they support US Forest Service (USFS) wildfire contracts.
Precision Helicopters is the first North American operator to outfit the Axnes PNG system to the AS332 platform specifically for firefighting missions.
The PNG WICS is designed to integrate into any aircraft communications suite, or function as a standalone, portable system. It allows secure, full-duplex communication without the limitations of wired intercom systems. This, Axnes stated, is intended to improve crew mobility and reduce the risk of cord snags.
“Integrating the Axnes PNG system into our Super Puma fleet is a game-changer,” said Grayson Barrows, General Manager of Precision Helicopters. “This technology not only enhances crew safety and communication but also increases our operational flexibility in the field. Blueflite and Hawk AeroSafety
Blueflite, a developer of advanced drone logistics platforms, and aviation safety consultancy Hawk AeroSafety announced a strategic partnership to deliver a next-generation safety management system (SMS), built to support both crewed and uncrewed aviation environments.
The new SMS solution will be embedded within blueflite’s proprietary blueDigital platform, offering a scalable, cloud-based ecosystem to help operators meet evolving safety and compliance requirements. The tool aims to support operations ranging from drone logistics to helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and other high-risk, time-critical missions.
It teams blueflite’s digital infrastructure with Hawk AeroSafety’s expertise in aviation safety programs, regulatory frameworks, and risk management systems.
“We’re combining Hawk’s deep safety and compliance expertise with blueflite’s software capabilities to offer something that fills an important unmet need in the drone industry,” said James McClearen, Chief Technology Officer at blueflite. “This partnership reflects our commitment to delivering operational tools that scale with the needs of aviation teams worldwide.”

Centum and Airbus
Centum has announced that its airborne phone location system, Lifeseeker, will be available as a factory-installed option on Airbus Helicopters’ platforms, under a new agreement between the two companies.
Lifeseeker is designed to enhance SAR operations by turning mobile phones into distress beacons, even when no network coverage is available. By integrating the system directly during production, Airbus Helicopters can offer operators a fully certified and avionics-compatible SAR capability from the point of delivery.
The agreement marks a step forward in Centum’s collaboration with Airbus Helicopters and positions the Spanish technology company as a trusted supplier of advanced SAR solutions integrated directly into aircraft production lines.
“We are pleased to deepen our collaboration with Airbus Helicopters and make Lifeseeker available as a line-fit option,” said Javier Chamorro, Executive President of Centum. “This agreement helps end users access critical SAR technology more easily, improving response times and mission success.”
By integrating the system during production, operators can avoid the extra steps of post-delivery modifications and certification. This may be particularly relevant for emergency services that need their aircraft available for operations without delay.
The technology locates and connects to mobile phones in areas such as remote terrain or disaster zones, where conventional communication networks are unavailable or damaged.
De Havilland and Universal Avionics
De Havilland Canada has selected Universal Avionics (UA) to supply avionics as part of flight deck upgrades to its Dash 8 series 100 and 200 fixed-wing aircraft.
UA’s InSight Display System will be used to modernize the aircraft type to increase operational efficiency and digital capabilities with connected solutions.
The InSight installation on the Dash 8 will feature five high-resolution LCD displays with improved synthetic vision and digital engine indication, replacing aging CRT displays. This will reduce overall weight and increase available payload.
Variants of the Dash 8 – such as the Dash 8-400AT and Dash 8-400MRE – are a popular choice for operators conducting aerial firefighting operations.
Precision navigation will be enabled down to required navigational performance authorization required (RNP AR) 0.1, while new terrain awareness warning systems will enhance situational awareness.
Dual touchscreen controllers and KAPTURE recorders will offer streamlined pilot andmaintenance workflows, complemented by UniLink data communications and UA’sFlightPartner and FlightReview applications.
UA stated that it believed the automated database delivery would help technicians save around 45 minutes on aircraft updates each month.
Metro Gulf and FlightSat
Aviation solutions developer Metro Gulf has announced a plan to acquire supplemental type certificate (STC) approval for the installation of the FlightSat Starlink in-flight connectivity system on Cessna 208 and 208B Caravans.
The solution will allow operators of these single-engine turboprop aircraft to access high-speed, low-latency broadband internet through the Starlink satellite network.
This would include download speeds of 100–300Mbps, upload speeds of 20–40Mbps, and latency of 20–80ms while in flight.
The solution involves the installation of a low-profile antenna, a power and data interface, and a cabin connectivity system. It can be fitted by Metro Gulf directly at its facility in Lafayette, Louisiana.
The company will also provide integration support and ongoing maintenance for the Starlink system under the STC.
Following the receipt of the STC for Cessna Caravans, Metro Gulf said that it planned to pursue similar approvals for the Pilatus PC-12 series, and the Daher Kodiak 100.
“With Starlink, VIP and commercial Caravan operators can now enjoy reliable internet access even in the most remote regions, improving operational efficiency, safety, and passenger experience,” said Joey Calandra, Director of Maintenance at Metro Gulf. “For our law enforcement operators, Starlink high-speed connectivity opens the door to streaming digital video at a high rate of speed with exceptional quality.”
OFIL Airborne and Nova Maps
OFIL Airborne has partnered with Nova Maps to integrate wildfire mapping into its aerial gimbal systems.
The partnership will allow helicopter operators that use OFIL’s gimbal systems to switch between utility inspections and wildfire mapping without the need for additional software or crew.
OFIL reported that Phoenix Heli-Flight, an operator based in Fort McMurray, Canada, had already used the company’s upgraded ROMLite gimbal to combat wildfires in the province of Alberta, having used the gimbal system for utility inspections in the past.
“The combo of OFIL’s HD and 4K sensors withNova’s AI mapping tools gives us incredible efficiency in the air; on one recent fire we were capturing over 5,000ha in a 2.5-hour flight,” said Cameron Spring, Operations Manager at Phoenix. “This huge rate of capture and quick data turnaround is especially useful on the big, fast-moving fires we’re seeing more of.”

Sikorsky and CAL FIRE
Sikorsky and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) have announced a new initiative to expand the research, innovation, and operational capabilities of aviation resources.
The five-year collaboration will focus on developing and integrating cutting-edge technologies, and enhancing the safety and efficacy of CAL FIRE operations to create a more efficient and effective approach to all-hazard emergency response. Autonomy-enabled aircraft will reduce pilot workload, improve situational awareness, and give first responders the flexibility to perform complex missions in dangerous and deteriorating conditions, day or night.
“The CAL FIRE Aviation Program prioritizes safety of air operations and ensures our flight crews have the proper training, equipment, and advanced technologies for maximum effectiveness on all-risk missions,” said Steve Robinson, Assistant Deputy Director of Aviation and Mobile Equipment at CAL FIRE. “CAL FIRE is excited to collaborate with Sikorsky and determine how their advanced technologies could benefit our helicopter and uncrewed aerial system programs.”
CAL FIRE and Sikorsky will be positioned to explore the development of an autonomous Sikorsky S-70i Firehawk helicopter. CAL FIRE operates a fleet of 16 Firehawks as its primary rotary-wing firefighting asset, including two aircraft that were recently delivered in the summer of 2025.

Smith Myers and Airbus
Smith Myers has announced a major contract with Airbus Helicopters to supply its ARTEMIS MPDLS, which will now be available as both a factory-fit and retrofit option across Airbus’s fleet of aircraft.
Andrew Munro, Managing Director of Smith Myers, said: “This tender and contracting activity was highly rigorous. Being selected by a company of Airbus’ status underscores the effectiveness and reliability of our ARTEMIS systems, which are already being installed on a number of Airbus helicopters now.”
The framework contract includes not only the ARTEMIS system but also integrated logistics support, life-cycle management, and training and simulation provisions.
Smith Myers’ ARTEMIS suite has already been adopted for major SAR and coast guard programs in the UK, Europe, and North America. The system is designed to locate mobile telephones in difficult airborne environments using just two small antennas. It can detect a handset at ranges of up to 35km and offers advanced functions such as mass-mapping and geofencing, helping to reduce crew workload.
By operating as a standalone system without relying on mobile network operators, ARTEMIS delivers rapid and accurate results, even in poor visibility or instrument meteorological conditions. According to Smith Myers, this automation speeds up rescues and improves mission outcomes.
Technisonic and Macro-Blue
Technisonic Communications has partnered with tactical display specialist Macro-Blue to integrate its TDFM-9000 series radios into Macro-Blue’s advanced Q-Series display systems. The collaboration aims to deliver enhanced situational awareness and operational flexibility for mission aircraft across law enforcement, EMS, federal, and forestry sectors.
“Recognizing strong synergies and mission focus across our companies, the collaboration of Technisonic and Macro-Blue brings an exciting new level of integration and situational awareness to mission aircraft,” said a spokesperson for Technisonic.
The integration enables aircrews to manipulate key radio functions – including zone, channel, volume, and selected radio task – directly from the Q-Series display, alongside mission-critical data such as mapping and video. By combining communications control with mission system displays, the partnership is redefining how airborne teams communicate and operate.
“This is an exciting and next-generation jump for Technisonic,” said Jim Huddock, Director of Business Development.
Integration requires only a simple firmware upgrade and uses existing connectors on MCP-capable 9000 series radios. When connected to a Macro-Blue display, the TDFM radio – and any existing remote controls – retain full control and functionality.
Approvals
AEM
The US Department of the Interior (DOI) and the USFS have granted Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing (AEM) full approval for its MTP136D panel-mounted forest service radio.
The move opens the door for the radio’s use in all federally regulated aerial firefighting agency and contractor aircraft – a total of over 3,000 applicable aircraft.
The MTP136D radio meets all USFS communications requirements for aerial firefighting in all US jurisdictions.
It is a Project 25 Phase 1 compliant VHF FM solution for both digital and analog communication on all channels across the 136–174MHz frequency band. It also features a large, night vision imaging system (NVIS) compatible screen displaying all channel and operational information.
AEM originally released the MTP136D in its home market of Canada, in partnership with launch customer Yellowhead Helicopters. It subsequently achieved Transport Canada STC approval for the radio’s installation on the Airbus H125.
“Already in use in Canada and by some US state-led cooperator firefighting agencies, this USFS approval and acceptance now unlocks the ability for all US federal agencies and contractors on the front lines battling intense and devastating wildfires to have the most up-to-date radio technology at their fingertips,” said Tony Weller, AEM’s Sales and Marketing Director.

Airbus
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved a new instrument flight rules (IFR) capability for the Airbus H125.
The capability was developed by Airbus Helicopters in collaboration with Genesys Aerosystems, a subsidiary of Moog.
It consists of an upgraded cockpit and autopilot, along with redundant hydraulic and electrical systems.
Airbus stated that the approval paved the way for the first deliveries featuring the IFR capability to be dispatched from its assembly line in Columbus, Mississippi, this year.
The IFR capability will allow pilots to operate their aircraft more safely in low visibility and in challenging weather conditions, improving situational awareness and reducing pilot workload.
Jérôme Ronssin, Head of the Light Helicopters Program at Airbus Helicopters, said: “This new IFR feature will expand the helicopter’s mission capabilities in all weather conditions, especially for critical missions such as public services, including law enforcement, emergency medical services, and pilot training – missions that are in high demand worldwide, and particularly in North America.”
Bell Textron
Bell Textron announced that the Subaru Bell 412EPX had received Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) validation and could begin flight operations throughout Canada.
“We’re pleased the Subaru Bell 412EPX has received TCCA certification and look forward to growing its presence globally,” said Danny Maldonado, Chief Commercial Officer at Bell. “This aircraft offers superior operational performance and efficiency for our customers while maintaining its long-standing reputation for reliability.”
Combining its increased maximum internal weight of 12,200lb, external weight of 13,000lb, and ability to carry 5,000lb with a cargo hook, the Subaru Bell 412EPX stands out in its class for its ability to transport multitudes of public safety supplies. The Subaru Bell 412EPX’s robust main rotor gearbox with dry run capability enables operators to benefit from increased horsepower to perform public safety operations more efficiently.
This announcement of validation follows six months after European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification, which allowed one aircraft of this type to be purchased by the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of the Interior, destined to be used for civil protection, firefighting, medical transport, and natural disaster support.
Boost Systems
Boost Systems has received approval from EASA for its Complex Personnel Carrying Device System (cPCDS).
The STC allows the use of the cPCDS with the Boost human external cargo (HEC) system for the Airbus H125.
The system was developed in collaboration with Swiss firm AirWork & Heliseilerei (A&H), and enables multi-person rescues to be conducted.
Boost said the system had a carry capacity of 500kg when used in tandem with the H125, and could be installed “within minutes”.
“Working closely with A&H allowed us to offer a cPCDS specifically for our Airbus H125/AS350 HEC system here in Europe,” said Derek Thomas, President of Boost Systems.
Garmin
Garmin has announced receipt of STC approval for the installation of its GFC 600H helicopter flight control system on Airbus H130 helicopters.
The STC allows the system to be retrofitted on both the H130 and EC130 T2 through Garmin’s authorized dealer network, or be installed as an option for new H130s.
The system offers a range of functions, including attitude hold with speed stability, a hover assist mode, Helicopter Electronic Stability and Protection (H-ESP), a return-to-level (LVL) mode, as well as overspeed and low-speed protection.
The hover assist mode can automatically detect a hover condition and provide flight control inputs to help maintain position over the ground.

In conjunction with Garmin’s G500H TXi and GTN Xi units, the system also provides en route navigation guidance and fully coupled missed approach procedures including holds, as well as SAR patterns.
The GFC 600H includes a console-mounted mode controller with push-button controls, and a night vision goggles (NVG) compatible display screen.
The main focus of the GFC 600H is to reduce pilot workload and improve mission effectiveness – something that is critical for aviators working in the special missions sector, and which reflects the H130’s use by some emergency air medical providers.
GPMS International
GPMS International has received FAA supplemental type certification for its Foresight MX HUMS on the Airbus H145 D2 and D3 platforms. This was achieved in collaboration with Wysong Enterprises and Metro Aviation, partners that played a crucial role in the certification and installation process.
“This STC is a major win for GPMS given the widespread adoption of the H145,” said Todd Powers, Vice President of Sales at GPMS. “With more than 600 H145s in operation globally, we saw a clear need for a more affordable, easy-to-install HUMS solution. With this certification, H145 operators now have access to Foresight MX’s advanced HUMS capabilities, including predictive analytics, real-time monitoring, and fleet-wide health insights.
Powers added: “We want to extend our gratitude to Wysong Enterprises and Metro Aviation for their invaluable contributions to this STC. Their deep expertise and hands-on involvement helped us refine the installation process to optimize performance on the H145 platform.”
Helitak
Helitak has received STC approval from the FAA for its FT1300 aerial firefighting tank for the Airbus H125.
The FT1300 tank can be integrated without structural modifications to the AS350/H125 airframe or the loss of interior space.
It is capable of carrying up to 1,300L of water or fire retardant, and can be installed and removed in under 20 minutes.
“We see the AS350/H125 as a great initial attack helicopter and are very happy to see the FT1300 tank certified by the FAA,” said Jason Schellaars, CEO of Helitak. “The FT1300 is our latest tank to receive FAA STC certification and will give aerial firefighting companies another airframe to add to their toolkit that can be used to fight fires around the world. We look forward to seeing it at work on fires in the near future.”
Recoil
Recoil Aerospace received FAA approval for its Tsunami aerial fire suppression system (AFSS) tank system for UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The company’s STC SR02584AK is the only carbon fiber system approved for UH-60 operations.
The STC allows Recoil’s design, used globally in firefighting, to be applied to all UH-60 type certificate holders and UH-60/S-70 variants. With approval, US firefighting programs can adopt this technology for the wildfire season, and Tsunami AFSS units are available for immediate acquisition.

The tank system features underside fuselage mounting, a 1,000gal capacity, retractable design, the fastest airspeed, and rapid hover-filling. Compared with legacy external water buckets, it offers a major performance upgrade, allowing Recoil-equipped crews to fly over urban areas without the risk of underslung, jettisonable loads. With high-volume water drops and a rapid turnaround time, the UH-60 Tsunami AFSS can help control new wildfires and protect homes in an urban interface fire outbreak.
SPAES
Aircraft interiors specialist SPAES, an EASA Part 21J Design Organisation, has announced the release of an STC for the EC155 helicopter, introducing additional life raft deployment handles to enhance safety during water ditching scenarios. The modification meets the requirements of Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/1254, specifically Part 26, Section 26.420 on emergency equipment for operations over water.
Designed for EC155 helicopters engaged in HEMS and offshore missions, the upgrade applies to aircraft already certified for IFR and equipped with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) life rafts beneath the passenger doors. Previously, rafts could only be deployed from the cockpit or via a single external handle between the crew and passenger doors.
The new SPAES STC adds a third external handle directly to each life raft container, enabling survivors to deploy rafts even if the helicopter has capsized.
Fabian Passler, the project manager at SPAES, commented: “This STC ensures that operators of the EC155 are fully compliant with the latest safety regulations while significantly improving the survivability of crew and passengers in offshore scenarios. Adding a low-positioned deployment handle enables water survivors to activate the life rafts even in the most critical situations, including a capsized helicopter.”

BlueRoom, an Australian simulation training company, has unveiled an advanced addition to its mixed reality (MR) suite: the CH-47F Chinook. The new training environment offers enhanced realism and complexity, aimed at elevating the preparedness of air medical teams.
Developed for high-fidelity training, this environment enables medics, flight crews, and combat support teams to rehearse complex casualty evacuation and in-flight care in a fully immersive, mission-ready setting.

Coptersafety
Coptersafety’s TRU AW169 full-flight simulator (FFS), now upgraded with Phase 8 avionics, has been certified to Level D by both the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This is the highest possible certification level under EASA and CAA standards.
As the AW169 helicopter sees growing use among special missions operators, this upgrade allows Coptersafety to deliver enhanced training capabilities using the latest avionics for both current and future customers.
“I’m very happy to announce that the long-awaited Phase 8 upgrade of our AW169 FFS Level D is finally ready for training,” said Toni Rönnberg, Coptersafety’s COO. “Coptersafety has very high standards when it comes to the simulator quality. There was unfortunately a delay on the upgrade process, which was to ensure that our customers will have the best possible training value and quality from the simulator, which is now in the latest avionics version.”
The simulator is designed for flexibility and realism, offering immersive training for any mission type or weather scenario. It includes features such as cockpit vibration, smoke generation, 3D clouds, night and NVIS/NVG visual scenes. Visual environments based on real-world locations and landing sites can also be customized by Coptersafety’s in-house visual modeling team.
Training sessions in the Level D AW169 simulator are now available at Coptersafety’s Training Center, located just four minutes from Helsinki International Airport in Finland.
Entrol
Flight simulator manufacturer Entrol has announced the launch of a new MR mission training solution, the MR Hoist Operator Station. It is designed to create an immersive training environment, focusing on communication between the pilot and hoist operator.
The solution integrates with Entrol’s line of flight simulators, and offers four-axis winch cable control, allowing the simulation of complex hoist maneuvers, including emergency scenarios such as engine failure or spinning cables.
The simulator features customizable mission scenarios tailored to mission types including SAR, firefighting, and offshore operations. It can also be adapted to a range of different aircraft configurations.

Loft Dynamics
Loft Dynamics has announced the release of its Airbus H145 VR simulator. Boston MedFlight, a US-based air ambulance provider, was announced as an initial adopter of the simulator, which will be installed at one of its four bases.
The simulator is designed to support the training needs of a range of operators, including those working in HEMS, law enforcement, and the military.
It features a full-scale replica cockpit with a 360° panoramic view, a full-body pose tracking system, and artificial intelligence (AI) powered performance tracking.
It also offers a range of customizable scenarios and environments for conditions such as NVG, whiteout/brownout, and helicopter external sling-load operations (HESLO).The simulator also has a virtual demonstration mode that digitizes flight instructionsfrom pilots and operator instructors, allowing them to provide immersive VR training experiences to trainees.

Smith Myers
At the Paris Air Show, Smith Myers showcased a fully integrated airborne mission simulation system, in collaboration with training provider JD2E, situational awareness specialist CarteNav, and sensor manufacturer Teledyne FLIR.
The demonstration centered around JD2E’s Deployable Mission Operator Station (DMOS), a mobile, multi-role simulation platform used to train aircrew across a variety of operational environments. Designed for realism and flexibility, DMOS integrates key technologies to replicate mission scenarios including SAR, border surveillance, maritime patrol, and disaster relief.
Featured in the system is Smith Myers’ ARTEMIS solution, CarteNav’s AIMS-ISR mission management software, and Teledyne FLIR’s Star SAFIRE airborne sensor range. The integration allows SAR operators to train using realistic handset detection, augmented reality mapping, and automated sensor cueing.
