UK city launches drone initiative to boost urban emergency medical delivery

Coventry City Council is set to explore how drone technology could bolster emergency medical logistics across urban areas.

The initiative, known as URBAN ASCENT, brings together the council, Skyfarer, the Manufacturing Technology Centre, and Slink-Tech. The consortium will investigate how uncrewed aircraft might be deployed to move time-critical medical items through city environments.

Beyond emergency supply transport, the programme will also focus on developing detailed urban structure mapping, enhancing disaster-response capabilities, supporting search and rescue (SAR) operations, and improving connectivity in hard-to-reach locations.

Backed by a government grant aimed at advancing future aviation systems, URBAN ASCENT is intended to help position both Coventry and the wider UK as leaders in low-carbon, city-focused aerial logistics and next-generation aviation.

Coventry University will contribute by assessing the commercial viability of drone use for selected urban applications.

Cllr Jim O’Boyle, Coventry City Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, said: “Drones are already proving that they can support work in controlled environments – including tasks such as observing traffic movements and investigating bridge structures.

“The next step is to see if this can transfer to a larger and maybe even commercial scale. It’s great we are working with local partners on this project – it’s a great fit with the city’s pioneering role in innovation.”

Skyfarer, a UK-based drone company, recently partnered with University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust and Viking Drone Packaging to develop the Orca uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV).
