The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has announced plans to use drones to monitor the country’s road network

The aim of the scheme is to monitor road safety and prevent traffic violations.

The initiative was confirmed by Boniface Rutikanga, an RNP spokesperson who was interviewed by Rwanda’s New Times newspaper.

He explained that drones are already used in parts of the country to identify suspicious activity such as illegal mining, to monitor large gatherings, and to respond to emergency incidents, but have not been rolled out nationwide.

Rwanda has become an enthusiastic adopter of drone technology in recent years. It announced a partnership in 2022 with Zipline to develop a nationwide medical logistics drone network by 2029.
